The
Village Centre of Kings Hill will become the focal point of the
development and will feature retail and commercial areas, leisure
facilities and housing.
Currently the retail sector is represented by Asda,
who opened a medium sized ASDA Fresh supermarket on the site at Easter
2000. Other outlets are due to follow.
A public house has just been completed by
Shepherd Neame and opened in December 2001. The pub has been named
"The Spitfire" to reflect West Malling's historic WWII
past, although the airfield was not a mainstream Spitfire
"Battle of Britain" base (some Spitfires did fly out of the
airfield during the War).
The original West Malling Airbase control tower lies
within the Village Centre. This building is Listed and will be
incorporated within the development possibly as a centre-piece in a
hotel, restaurant or leisure complex.
The
University of Greenwich has recently opened a large facility in the
village centre; a medical centre is planned and the village hall will
also be located close by (completion December 2001). A nursery school
has also opened recently, expanding its previous facilities which were
based in nearby temporary buildings.
The housing area will include "affordable"
housing as well as property at the other extreme of the price range. The
planning concept incorporates "green lanes" for
pedestrian/cyclist access intersecting vehicular roadways at small
squares. Ramps, bollards and speed bumps will restrict traffic speeds
and allow both cars and pedestrians to mix with safety, ensuring a
"vibrant area with human scale that is both user friendly and
accessible by public transport, road, cycle and on foot" (quote
Rouse Kent, February 2001).
The scheme will reflect the design features of
Poundbury in Dorset. Housing will feature courtyard designs and be of
higher density that other areas in the development.
